Strike programme

Next week, our planned strike action will take place on Tues 2, Wed 3 and Thurs 4th December.

We need members to turn out in numbers on the picket line for maximum impact, so please come along for as much as you feel able, while making time to rest. The picket line will be a very positive and empowering experience and it is the best way to signal to the University that they need to change direction.

Please mark your availability to participate in the picket on the form hereSTRIKE PROGRAMME

This is so we can have an idea of numbers and spread across sites.

Observe the strike

We only take strike action once every other avenue of influence has been exhausted and when the democratic decision-making bodies of the union believe there is no other way to make employers change their position. It is a very serious sanction and that is why we ask that every member observes the strike.

Members who do not observe the strike, undermine the union’s bargaining power and make it harder for us to protect all of our members. Participating in an industrial action ballot and observing industrial action are defending the interests of staff and students alike—staff’s working conditions are the students’ learning conditions!

Don’t make it easy for management

Management will be trying very hard to find cover for those they suspect will strike, there is no obligation to declare your intentions ahead of time. We need to ensure that this is not possible, as such we recommend not sharing materials ahead of time (not even left ‘Hidden from students’ on Course Resources, as these module pages are accessible to many staff.)

Formally, it is the employer’s responsibility to explain to students if sessions are to be cancelled on strike days, However, if you see your students  in the meantime, talk to them about the reason for withdrawal of labour, invite them to join us and encourage them to write to management. Our students are hurt far more by management’s actions than by our own.
