Tuesday’s focus was on the Cavendish Building which the University has recently spent more than £70 million on. Staff and students on the picket line were asking whether this was money wisely spent in a period in which the University was about to enter a financial crisis. The slogan has emerged that the University is prioritising ‘bricks over brains’.

Around 60 pickets protested in front of the Cavendish building and then marched into town, singing, chanting and making a lot of noise. We gather on Cathedral Square to listen to speeches from staff, students and other supporters.
Day 3
Tomorrow is day 3 (Thursday 4th December). We will be picketing and organising a teach out.
Firstly, and most importantly, we will be picketing the Kedleston Road campus tomorrow. From 8.30am until 12 noon we will be at the gate of the Kedleston Road campus, reminding anyone who goes into the nearly empty campus that there is a strike going on. Join us if you can.
There will also be a picket at the Chesterfield campus from 8.30am.
Teach out
Unlike the University of Derby, we don’t want to deny students their education. For these reasons we are holding a teach-out in the afternoon of Thursday 4 December. Teach outs are when lecturers provide alternative education outside of the university. It’s a chance to engage in teaching that models modes of education or topics that staff would like to offer within the university, but ordinarily can’t.
This will take place on the picket line in the morning and at Thrivemind Village in the afternoon (39 Iron Gate, Derby DE1 3GA) from 1pm.

Everyone is invited to attend the Teachout. Anyone who would like to contribute a session should get in touch on the picket line or just come along and let us know.
See you all tomorrow.
